I’ve been a mom for a few years and I still struggle to be content with my home. When you are constantly getting interrupted by children, your house is never clean, and you have an endless list of projects that need to get done, it can be difficult to find joy in the way your home looks and feels. Loving Your Home Even When You Don’t: Encouragement to Be Content with What You Have as a Mom.
But the truth is that there really isn’t anything more important than being a good parent and trying your best.
In this blog post, I want to talk about how you can love your home even when you don’t. And, why having a good attitude is a must. You’ll never be the perfect mom and you will always have stressors in your life that make it difficult to maintain a perfectly clean and decorated home, but having a positive outlook helps tremendously!
There are a couple of things that can help you find joy in your home, even when it doesn’t feel like there is.
The first thing we should take note of is the fact that if we fixate on our house being clean and organized all the time, then we will never be content with where we live because no matter what we do, it will never be perfect. No matter how much you work on your house, there are always new projects to complete and things that need fixing around the home.
SYSTEMS- Chore Charts, Before School Routine, After School Routine, and Meal Planning. Systems like these can make life run so much smoother. You can check out my post on them here.
If you don’t have a lot of time to get your house in order, systems are the way to go! Another thing that has helped me tremendously is taking some quiet time each day for myself. Whether I take ten minutes or an hour, it allows me to unwind and relax.
STATIONS- Backpack and school station, lunch packing station, and snack stations. Having
Stations that are dedicated to specific things makes it much easier when you have a busy schedule. A station for backpacks and homework make it easier to have everything in one place and for your kids to know where everything goes. I love a lunch packing station on my counter I use the cabinet above it for all lunch boxes and cups. Then, I use the drawer under it for all lunch packing supplies like food picks, utensils, and sandwich cutters. Having a snack station makes it easier for kids to grab snacks without assistance. Which then gives you more time to do other things that need done.
Stop comparing your home to others.
I used to get so jealous of other moms homes and the way they looked and felt. But, they aren’t in my season of motherhood and I’m not in theirs. They would post pictures of their perfectly decorated homes that looked like they were straight out of a magazine, while mine was cluttered and messy with toys everywhere!
I am not saying you should never decorate your home because that can be a very rewarding process. But, if you are constantly thinking about how your home looks compared to others, then it is going to cause more stress and anxiety than anything else.
The third thing is to take time each day for yourself. This does not mean you should sit around and watch TV all the time, but it means that if your husband or kids are going to be out of the house for a couple hours then taking advantage of this could help immensely! Relaxing helps bring great perspective back into your life so you can see things for what they are.
I want to mention here is don’t forget the milestones in life! The house will always look cluttered when there are little ones running around and if you are constantly throwing things out or reorganizing your home, then it is going to become very overwhelming. Do the best you can for the season of life you are in.
I want to encourage you to be content with what you have.
You can’t get your house to look like the houses you see on Pinterest all the time, but that isn’t what life is about anyway. There are so many more important things in this world than having a perfectly clean and decorated home and there just aren’t enough hours in the day for some of us to have an immaculate house all the time! You are doing great! Focus on getting things organized and systems in place to have your days running more smoothly and I promise you will feel more content with how your home looks and feels.
